Who’s Your Board of Directors?

If you’re like most small business owners you haven’t found that person you could rely on to bounce ideas around, provide feedback, offer suggestions, or lend their experience.  You’ve probably had to rely way too much on your spouse, friends, or family members who may not have experienced the small business challenges you face, or aren’t objective enough to provide tough feedback.

Large companies have a Board of Directors, either elected or appointed, who oversee the business plan of the company and provide a level of accountability to the executive team.  In a small business it’s the owner, maybe an employee or two who provides some insight, and if they’re lucky a friend with small business experience who can offer some advice.  But for the most part the small business owner is out there on their own hoping to find solutions to their business problems and keep the business moving forward.

Having spent hundreds of hours consulting with and coaching small business owners I would say planning and accountability are the two greatest challenges facing small business owners.  Most don’t take the time to plan usually because they are too busy working in their business.  They either don’t know how to get started, tried before but never saw the benefit, or just prefer to “wing it”.  And when it comes to accountability, well, most just seem to prefer to be accountable to themselves despite the potential consequences.

Obviously I’m a big proponent of every business owner having a coach.  Someone who can provide a healthy mix of advice and expertise when needed, motivation and brainstorming when it gets hard, and an outside perspective to guide you and your business to its fullest potential.  But finding a group of peers is equally important.

That’s where MasterPlan Club comes in.  We attract like-minded business owners, teach strategic planning concepts and business building strategies, and facilitate mastermind meetings.  All participants learn to work from a plan and have a group of business owners to share their experiences, teach and learn from one another.

If planning and accountability are areas where you could stand to get a bit better then check out what MasterPlan Club has to offer.
